Client Wins Are YOUR Wins - The TEAM approach: A Positive Rant Inspired By A Friend

Client Wins Are Your Wins Blog.png

Sarah Moore is a friend of mine - a peer in digital marketing whom I met in San Francisco in 2016 at the Periscope Community Summit and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. She knows her stuff and I learn a lot from her. The other day she posted this on LinkedIn:

See how that happens? If your friends don’t inspire you then you need new friends.

And as a digital marketer If your client doesn’t consider you part of the team then you may have the wrong client. And if you’re not looking to be part of that team and don’t care about really feeling it - taking it to heart - then you’re in the wrong business.  So if we assume you’re in it for the right reasons, and if you’re part of the team and the team wins?  Damn right you should celebrate that victory!  Sarah is spot on. Client wins are YOUR wins.

Being part of the team makes digital marketing rewarding

I didn’t like Corporate America when I was in it. Oddly enough I just had a nightmare last night that I was back in it with no shot of hitting “QUOTA” for the month trying to sell a crappy product with crappy support in a crappy culture and a crappy boss - not kidding, but I digress…

When you are hired to help shape a brand’s message and you’re trusted to do it from the outside it’s a beautiful thing. You really get to consult. Floating on the fringes of the company but still a team member with an often drama-free position.  A hired gun - think Winston Wolf in Pulp Fiction or Dr. Melfi in The Sopranos. Okay maybe those aren’t exact examples of a digital marketer’s role but those are two of my favorite characters, and a core component of your role is to be a company therapist or fixer if you’re doing it right - not simply the “Content Poster”. I take this to heart and I love to be a valued part of a team going back to my college football days of playing for Bo Schembechler who gave this now famous locker room speech about THE TEAM. I just don’t think my content would be any good if I didn’t bleed Five Guys Red & White or Super Car Wash Red & Blue when I’m wearing their hats.  You need to believe in it. You need to feel a part of it.

Consumers can smell canned crap from a mile away...

Yes they can - you can bet on it. I’ve seen some of the worst. I know of a social media “company” that was posting the same garbage for multiple clients in the Metro Detroit area and just changing the brand name. What a joke. Like Sparky Polastri in Bring It On - the hilarious psychotic choreographer who taught the exact same routine to a bunch of cheerleading teams (“spirit fingers” anyone?). That’s not someone who acts like part of the team.

So be a part of the team - approach it that way. You’ll enjoy it more, your content will be better and everyone will win. Celebrate the wins of your clients and know that they are also YOUR wins. If you’re doing it right that is….
